Medicare Coverage Options

Original Medicare (Parts A and B) helps cover many healthcare services, but it does not pay for everything. Many people choose additional coverage to help manage out-of-pocket costs.

Your Options

Medicare Advantage (Part C)

Medicare Advantage plans are offered by private insurance companies approved by Medicare. These plans combine Part A and Part B coverage and may include additional benefits.

Costs Associated With Part A

- Deductible: A deductible must be met before Medicare Part A begins to cover eligible services.

- Premiums: Many individuals do not pay a premium for Part A if they or their spouse paid Medicare taxes for at least 10 years. Those who do not meet this requirement may be able to purchase Part A coverage.

- Copayments and Coinsurance: Cost-sharing may apply for extended hospital or skilled nursing facility stays.

- Inpatient hospital care: coinsurance applies after day 60 of a benefit period.

- Skilled nursing facility care: coinsurance applies after day 20 of a benefit period.

-Inpatient mental health care: coinsurance applies after day 60 of a benefit period.

Note: Medicare coverage is generally accepted nationwide, as most hospitals in the United States participate in the program.

Prescription Drug Coverage (Part D)

Stand-alone Part D plans can be added to Original Medicare to help with prescription drug costs. Many Medicare Advantage plans also include drug coverage.
